A response to the 2018 Tapestry Design Prize for Architects competition

in collaboration with Jaime Mayger.

The Tapestry was to be designed for the Pharos Wing of MONA in Tasmania, Australia.

The Weavers Code

Pharos. The wing that says nothing. Controlled thrashing, pure reflection. Loss, discovery, delight. Light, dark, colour. Present, photogenic. In this wing, each artwork is what it is, and probably not more. So - what is a tapestry?

A tapestry is not simply a picture. It is not two-dimensional. It is not digital.

A tapestry is a craft - a process. Analogue, but somehow also computational. It is pixelated and textured, hairy and dense. It is moment by moment captured in a stitch by the weaver. Why pretend it is anything less?

We are not creating a tapestry design; we are providing a set of rules, a code for the creation of a tapestry. The design we have provided is not the design we propose, but a crude example of our code in action. We have tested the code with our own medium – stamps on A0 paper with the warp and weft controlled by a base layer grid.

The rules are simple, but subject to human error and the weaver’s discretion.

Without human interaction, this code might create a uniform outcome. But, this outcome is subject to and reliant on the code being disrupted by the human hand; the speed of each weaver and the essential breaks they take while working, causing collision, passing, ending, starting again.

The outcome will be unique to its conditions. It will not be pretentious and may not be aesthetic. But, it will show and celebrate the craft of tapestry. Each stitch a result of its weavers and its process.

Pick your colour
The colour pallet is below. This will identify you across the tapestry

Pick a Home Warp - ‘X’ marks the spot
Spread yourselves out, someone in the left corner, no one in the right commence left-to-right

Plain weave only
Left-to-right or right-to-left as the following rules require

Hit an edge, up and back

Come to a ledge, drop down and carry on

Take a break or if in doubt, return to home warp commence again, left-to-right
