Schools are where children spend the majority of their childhood and the way we nurture young minds is directly related to the advance of our future. The current education system in Australia is progressing away from the wrote learning style – drawing on Finnish principles where individuals are encouraged to develop their unique characters from a young age. However, most Perth schools lack in their ability to promote this message through their physical form.
The Jetty school is located in south Cottesloe, on Australia’s West Coast, referencing the iconic jetty typology. Western Australia is a coastal urban scape; the jetty is the mark of civilisation for a small country town that then develops into a port for a city. The traditional timber jetty building type is both a renewable and nostalgic structure that deserves to be revived.
Due to gentrification, Perth’s coastal suburbs have an aging population; millenials reminisce over their childhood days by the beach and want this for their children. We aim to fill in this gap by having schools located along the coast, adding a layer of youth to the existing community’s demograph.
The spaces in the school are specifically design for the different multiple intelligences by Howard Gardner.
